Baby´s First Coup
Yesterday morning the opposition party tried to dislodge President Correa from office. He was released last night from the military hospital in Quito where he was being held. There were riots and protests in Guayaquil yesterday and access to the Puntilla and Guayaquil was cut off because the bridges were blocked. I was in Duran all day. One of my adult students in my morning class got a phone call (yes, I let them answer the phone in class) telling us what was going on and so I knew not to go to Mundo. Those who came back from Guayaquil said the streets were hectic with people protesting and burning tires. Everybody is safe; Kipp and Celso picked everybody up from work (only took a few hours..) and brought everyone back home. From where I am it doesn´t seem like we are in the thick of things. Life is going on as usual.

ReplyDeleteWhew! Good to hear you and your group are safe. Hope this doesn't mess up your work (or your trips) too much. As you can imagine, your mother needed a stiff drink at my birthday dinner last night but in the end she barely drank anything! The Garveys are keeping an eye on the news and fingers crossed for a return to normalcy for all of Ecuador!
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear everything is okay, Cait!
ReplyDeleteOk, it's October 2nd and you've had the obligatory earthquake experience and the equally frequent/annoying coup attempt. What's next, swimming in the piranha invested amazon or trekking along some mudslide riven path in the Andes? Could you have done this in some remote US outpost like Cleveland?
ReplyDeleteThings have quieted down. Back to work (and play). And no, Mum, what fun would that be? But yes to swimming with piranheas, though I have been told to stay out of the river for fear of growing a 3rd arm. Bummer.
ReplyDeleteAh, Cait, small problem. That comment was not from Mom. I've got to figure out how to register on this thing. Please do not come home with a third arm, not that there's anything wrong with that. It'd just be a little confusing.
ReplyDeleteGood to hear things are quieting down. A local (Norwell) family was going to Ecu. to vacation and got caught up at the airport.
Glad to see you finished No Country For Old Men. Stick with him, he's a great author though a bit on the dark side. Let me know if you want me to send you any books. I promise not to send you one unless you okay it!! You know how hard that will be for me!
ReplyDeleteHi Caitlin - this is Christina's mother. your mom shared the address with me, so i will follow your blog too. Looking forward to the experience through your eyes as well as Christina's!! Stay safe and happy; that's all we ask!
